Team Lotus to race in Formula One in 2010

Lotus are to return to Formula One in 2010 for the first time since 1994. The FIA have announced that the Malaysian-backed team have been given the final place on the Formula One grid to join the already confirmed entrants Manor F1, US F1 and Campos GP.

BMW Sauber have been given the 14th team position for 2010 meaning that they are now in a reserve position. Despite this the FIA has announced that it is to ‘consult urgently with the existing teams regarding the introduction of an appropriate rule change to expand the grid to 28 cars in time for the first Grand Prix in 2010.’

The new Lotus F1 Team will use the Cosworth engine for the duration of the 2010 championship with no mention currently as to a driver line-up. The team will now be involved in a race against time to prepare their car for the first Grand Prix of 2010 at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain on the 14th of March.

The Technical Director of Lotus will be Mike Gascoyne who has 20 years of experience in F1 with teams such as Force India, Toyota, Renault and Jordan. The team will be based initially in Norfolk, however plans are afoot for the entire operation to move to Malaysia when the new purpose-built facilities being prepared are complete.
